SUMMARY:The Oscar Devereaux Micheaux BFAB Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Oscar Devereaux Micheaux BFAB Festival celebrates Black film\, art\, and books in the heart of Paducah\, Kentucky — a UNESCO Creative City with deep roots in African American cultural history. \nCo-produced by the Paducah Historical Preservation Group\, Inc. (PHPG) and the Kentucky BIPOCU Filmmakers Association\, this festival honors the legacy of Oscar Devereaux Micheaux\, the pioneering Black filmmaker born near Paducah. \nOur festival is intentional. It was created to enhance cultural exchange through the arts in Paducah\, Kentucky — a UNESCO Creative City known for the National Quilt Museum\, the Lowertown artist community\, and the Hotel Metropolitan & Museum\, which was listed in the Green Book and hosted some of the greatest musicians of modern times. \nWe welcome submissions of short films\, anime\, documentaries\, and feature films with historical\, educational\, scientific\, cultural\, and social awareness themes. The festival will include a screening of Micheaux’s historic work\, along with authors and artists showcasing and selling their works. \n\nAwards & Prizes\nA Best Film award will be presented in each category: \n\nShorts\nAnime\nDocumentaries\nFeature Film\n\nAwards are determined based on audience votes.

What can our collective response look like? Join us in exploring how you can be a part of the effort\, and have lots of fun in the process! \nSaturday\, October 10\, 2026\n11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.\nRoots 101 African American Museum\n124 N 1st St\, Louisville\, KY 40202 \nFree & open to the public. Food & refreshments will be available! \nHere is a glimpse at what is possible during the Save Our Stories Festival: \n• Explore the Roots 101 African American Museum exhibits\n• Learn about inspiring “our stories told by us” projects from the people who are leading them\n• Discuss what YOU think needs to be documented\, preserved\, and passed on\, what role you can play to keep these stories alive\, and who else could also play a role\n• Meet others who share your passion for community-led storytelling and documentary arts\n• Try your hand at making documentary videos with the Kentucky BIPOCU Filmmakers Association\n• Conduct genealogical research with guidance from the African American Genealogical Group of Kentucky\n• Learn how you can digitize your treasured photographs and videotapes\n• Learn how to record stories you care about through oral history interviewing\n• See what’s on your old videotapes at a VHS viewing station\n• Observe or participate in a Community Archiving Workshop in which archivists and community members inspect and catalog collections of materials that are precious to our community\n• Practice some of your new skills\n• Take home resources for your next step in your own preservation projects
